The Haitian-American professional boxer Andre Berto tested positive for the steroid Nandrolone. The Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) conducted the drug testing.
This boxer had to meet Victor Ortiz on June 23, 2012 in Los Angeles. This boxer agreed to submit to random drug testing before the match. T: E ratio method and carbon isotope ratio testing were used; they both indicated about usage of Nandrolone.
It was already the second time this month, when the VADA tested boxers and caught them taking steroids. The first boxer that tested positive this month due to tests conducted by the VADA was Lamont Peterson. He had to fight against Amir Khan. It is quite ironically that Peterson requested random blood and urine testing. A carbon isotope ratio test conducted by the VADA showed that exogenous testosterone was in system of Peterson certain weeks before the match.
The tests conducted by the VADA influenced greatly on financial position of several companies. For example, Golden Boy Promotions lost significant potential profit due to Lamont Peterson’s positives. It was estimated by Richard Schaeffer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, that the company lost 250, 000 dollars.
The cancelation of the fight between Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz will probably not cost so much because another boxer will possibly replace Andre Berto and will meet Ortiz.
Andre Berto didn’t explain what had led to his positives. He hired the attorney Howard Jacobs that would represent and defeat him.
Andre Berto said that he had never used steroids. Thus, he claimed that he investigated with his attorney what could lead to positives for steroids. The boxer Andre Berto concluded that he had never cheated; he succeeded in sport due to hard workouts and dedication.
The attorney Howard Jacobs defeated many other athletes that turned out to be victims of contaminated dietary supplements.
It is claimed that since the steroid Nandrolone has very long half life and it is detected easily, it is not very popular among doping athletes. But it has been defined numerous times that several dietary supplements contained the ingredient nandrolone that caused positives for steroids. But since sometimes not every compound is listed on the label, athletes become victims of contaminated dietary supplements.
