Names of twelve persons (4 men and 8 women) who acted as jury at the governmental case against the athlete Roger Clemens were released by the judge Reggie Walton.
The government wanted the jury to be convinced that the athlete had lied before the Congress about application of steroids and HGH. But since the jury didn’t believe it, the government criticized the individuals that acted as the jury. Certain persons who served as the jury were interviewed.
A political activist, an art historian, a teacher of deaf children, an official of Treasury Department and an employee of the Canadian Embassy were included in the jury.
The political activist Joyce Robinson-Paul was interviewed by the New York Daily News several days after the verdict. She confirmed that the jury understood that they had to be fair to both the government and the baseball player. But they didn’t find anything that had to be prosecuted. Later she also claimed that the federal prosecutors were not able to prove their accusations.
Bradford Weaver, an employee of the Canadian Embassy confirmed that the government acted wrongly. He noted that such situations should not be repeated. He also confirmed that there was nothing to be pursued. He was interviewed by the Associated Press. He also noticed that each juror was convinced from the very beginning that Clemens was not proven guilty of any charge. This person pointed that every juror was unanimous.
The employee of the Canadian Embassy was also asked whether he considered that Roger Clemens really administered steroids. Journalists of the Associated Press also asked him whether he considered that the governmental case against the athlete represented just the waste of taxpayers’ funds. But the employee of the Canadian Embassy didn’t answer the questions.
Another juror that chose not to be named confirmed that the jurors didn’t understand how the government made the decision to waste huge sums of money during 5 years in order to prosecute the athlete. This person confirmed that it was impossible to understand why the prosecution took place 5 years.
Other jurors didn’t present any information.
As for federal prosecutors, they were completely disappointed. They declined to respond to the statements pronounced by the jurors.
