Officials of the British government will be not capable to stop sportspeople importing steroids to the UK, when they come to participate in the 2012 Summer Olympics. However usage of steroids is prohibited in sports, self-administration of these products is legal in the UK. Just sale of steroids is considered to be illegal in this country. Thus, if anyone desires to import amount of anabolic steroids that is evidentially large, he/she will not be permitted to do it.
Before Olympic Games took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries changed laws linked with import and administration of steroids at least temporally. But the British government doesn’t want to modify steroid laws for the 2012 Olympics.
Ironically, while the government of the UK doesn’t want to make personal usage of steroids illegal, Britain sportspersons are banned for lifetime, if they take anabolic steroids. When it comes to the WADA Code, athletes that take forbidden drugs are banned for two years.
The Olympic minister Hugh Robertson notes that it is necessary to have a universal law related to sentencing. This minister insists on at least 4 years or even longer. However this minister is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t agree with such harsh punishment. Andy Parkinson, the CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency, thinks that several sanctions should be milder.
The Olympic minister acknowledges that there are various points of view in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask the CEO of the UKAD to resign.
The spokesman for Hugh Robertson has stated that any sportsperson can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she arrives to London. But the quantity of steroids must display that he/she has them just for personal usage. The spokesman has noted that it is not illegal for an athlete to use steroids under laws of the UK but if any athlete is caught taking forbidden medications, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD noticed that they would collaborate with border control officers. Information about sportspeople will be used by anti-doping officials.
5, 000 drug test, including 1, 000 blood tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee.
